Diagnostic instrument used in the detection of caries (decay) and calculus, exploration of pocket characteristics, furcations and restorations. Shepards hook #23 end for caries detection, and #17 end for anterior interproximal caries detection. Also used to check posterior interproximal margins, and subgingival calculus.
